Coffee Culture is Growing in Karnali Province

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee is no longer limited to the busy streets of Kathmandu or Pokhara. In recent years, coffee culture has steadily expanded into Karnali Province. Traditionally known for its remoteness, natural beauty, and agricultural lifestyle, Karnali is now witnessing a quiet but significant transformation through the rise of cafés, local coffee farming, and changing consumer habits.

Coffee in Karnali is becoming more than just a beverage. It is emerging as a symbol of urbanization, tourism, youth culture, and economic opportunity. From small tea shops introducing espresso machines to modern cafés opening in Surkhet and nearby towns, the province is gradually embracing a new lifestyle centered around coffee.

One of the cafés contributing to this transformation is Grace Coffee. The café has become a popular gathering place for students, professionals, and young entrepreneurs who prefer comfortable café environments for meetings, study sessions, and social interaction. According to discussions organized by the National Tea and Coffee Development Board, districts such as Surkhet, Dailekh, Jajarkot, Salyan, and Rukum Paschim have favorable climates for coffee farming. Government officials and agricultural experts have identified strong potential for expanding coffee production in these areas.

The rise of coffee farming could provide new economic opportunities for local farmers. Since Karnali has already been promoting organic agriculture, coffee fits naturally into the province’s agricultural vision. Organic farming initiatives in the region are creating an environment where high-quality coffee production may thrive in the future.

Tourism is also playing a major role in shaping coffee culture. Karnali’s growing tourism industry, especially around destinations like Rara Lake and Shey Phoksundo, has increased the demand for modern hospitality services. Travelers today often seek comfortable cafés offering local coffee, peaceful environments, and authentic experiences. The emergence of cafés has additionally created employment opportunities for young people. Many youths are learning barista skills and hospitality management as café businesses expand across Nepal. Despite this positive growth, challenges still remain. Coffee farming in Karnali faces issues such as limited technical knowledge, lack of processing facilities, and weak market access. Experts emphasize the need for government investment, training programs, and cooperation between local and federal authorities to fully develop the coffee sector in Karnali.

Nevertheless, the future appears promising. As road connectivity improves and urban centers in Karnali continue to develop, coffee culture is likely to grow further. Local cafés can become platforms for cultural exchange, tourism promotion, and youth creativity. At the same time, coffee farming may provide sustainable income opportunities for rural communities.

In conclusion, coffee culture in Karnali Province is gradually becoming part of the region’s social and economic transformation. What was once considered a luxury or urban trend is now taking root in Nepal’s western hills. Through the combined influence of tourism, agriculture, entrepreneurship, and cafés like Grace Coffee, coffee is shaping a new identity for Karnali—one cup at a time.
